Hawa Koomson claims, She fired gunshots for Self-Defense at a Registration Centre

Mavis Hawa Koomson, the MP for the Awutu Senya East, says she fired a gun at a voters registration centre in her constituency. There was a confrontation at a registration centre in the constituency on Monday, July 20, 2020, which led to gunshots being fired and motorbikes being burnt.

There were reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) officials fled from the scene following the altercation. The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has stated that the decision by MP for Awutu Senya East constituency to fire warning shots at a registration centre in Kasoa was justified.

According to Nana B, Mavis Hawa Koomson was not a violent person and so if she had to give a gunshot, it means she did so in self-defence.

“She came under serious attack and her life was under threat and she had to defend herself,” Nana B said on UTV’s Late News on Monday, July 20, 2020. Hon. Hawa states..
“When I got the information that people were being bused from some places into my constituency, I couldn’t sit down for people to come and register in my constituency and elect an MP for the people of Kasoa…I work with men because I can’t work with women alone in this political enterprise. None of my men had guns on them when we got to the centre, I fired the shots myself. Yes, I gave those warning shots to protect myself,” she said.

The NDC Parliamentary Candidate Naa Koryoo Okunor then accused the sitting MP of being the mastermind.

Meanwhile, the police say four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Kasoa Divisional Police Commander, COP Charles Koosono indicated that the suspects will be transferred to the Regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast for further action.
